Creating a linked account between Sonos & Google after having unlinked them

I ended up in a very annoying situation in which I unlinked my Sonos account from my Google account, but I wasn't able to link it again. The reason why the "unlink" procedure happened, was on request by Sonos Support itself as I was having stability issues with the Google Assistant. They wanted to me to reconfigure everything from scratch.

When setting up the Google Assistant for the first time, there was a step in the Sonos app asking me to allow Sonos to access my Google account. However, after unlinking Sonos and trying to install/configure the Google Assistant again, I never got that question again. This ended up in my Sonos devices telling me Sorry, your Sonos system is not reachable when providing them voice instructions.

Even after having several telephone calls with Sonos Support, we still didn't manage to bring it back. Until I figured out I had to install Google Home next to the Google Assistant application on my iPhone. In the Google Home app, I was able to properly detach Sonos (again) from my Google account. After having done that, I managed to reconfigure everything from scratch.

Pocket Casts as replacement for default iOS Podcasts app

I'm a person that really likes running and a couple of years ago, I bought myself an Apple Watch which serves as an activity tracker and music delivery system (I'm using bluetooth earbuds).

While running, I like listening to several podcasts. On my iPhone, I'm subscribed to several podcasts in the Podcasts app (by default available on iOS). There's a very nice (automatic) synchronisation with the Apple Watch which allows me to also listen to podcasts on my watch as well.

However, after listening to a podcast, the podcast is always automatically deleted from the watch which doesn't give you the benefit anymore to listen to it twice. I can also not redownload the episode to it. I searched everything and I even asked help to the Apple Community (see here), but I never came to a decent solution.

So I switched to OvercastFM. This app states in the documentation that you should be able to keep the podcasts on the watch after listening to them. However, I tried that but it didn't work. So I asked them for help ... and I never got an answer - which I still believe is a pity.

So the next app I tried was Pocket Casts. To get to the feature I want, I had to take a 'plus' subscription (so it's not free unfortunately), but finally, I found the app which solves my issue. On the Apple Watch itself, I can now easily choose which episodes I want to keep offline. There's still the annoying factor that the podcast is automatically deleted on the watch after having completely listened to it, but you can easily redownload it. Keep in mind that's better to disable "bluetooth" on the watch while downloading podcasts so that the watch is forced to use the WIFI network. I've noticed by default, it uses Bluetooth and some podcasts (for example of 250 MB) really take ages to get downloaded ...

Connecting a WH-1000XM2 to Ubuntu 18.04 using Bluetooth

When connecting my WH-1000XM2 with the default Bluetooth manager of Ubuntu, I'm getting by default a very low quality of audio and when switching to A2DP, I can't hear anything.

This is how I solved the issue:

  • Unpair the headphone (in case it's currently still paired)
  • Install blueman (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Blueman)
    $ sudo apt install blueman
  • After installation is done, open up blueman and click on Search
  • Select the WH-1000XM2, right click on it and select Setup...
  • Make sure the headphone is paired as an Audio Sink instead of a Headset. This is a very important step, if you don't do this, you won't get the correct audio atmosphere

Google Shared Calendar not showing up on Android device

A Google Calendar has been shared to another person. In the web application, the application shows up fine in the other account. But when the other person wants to view the shared calendar on his Android phone, it doesn't seem to work. That person is using the "native" calendar app of Android.

  • Install Google Calendar app
  • Open Google Calendar app
  • Go to Settings and open Agendas
  • Search for the agenda which you are missing in the native app
  • When opening that calendar, there's a button Synchronize which is turned off -> turn it on
  • Remove Google Calendar app
  • Reboot phone
  • Open native calendar app => the shared calendar now seems to popup
